Our database contains 550 German retailers and chains, which are ranked by turnover in each of the 18 sectors. For each retailer, a detailed profile is available.
The German economy has weathered the financial crisis much better than most of its European partners. The country ranks first in Europe in terms of nominal GDP and exports, and is the only one with a stable triple-A credit rating.
Low price discounters and traditional supermarket corporations dominate the retail market in Germany. Among the most important banners there are Edeka, Rewe, Lidl and Kaufland (Schwarz Gruppe), Aldi, and Metro Cash & Carry and Media Markt – Saturn (Metro Group). Internet retailers also have a major presence in this country, with Amazon and Otto as the biggest companies on the field.
Lidl, Metro Cash & Carry, and Media Markt – Saturn are the most renowned names due to their international presence. All of them currently operate in virtually every European country, with only a few exceptions.
